Colonics

When my daughter was born, I had what the nurse referred to as a “botched episiotomy”.  The vaginal opening was cut too deep and too long, leaving me with devastating repercussions.

The damage to nerves and muscles that controlled the bowel, sphincter and bladder was severe enough that I developed incontinence.  I had to have reconstructive surgery performed to tighten the tissue, pulling closer together those muscles and nerves in the surrounding area, resulting in increased control.  This is a severe surgery that took me a total of 8 months to fully recover from, with the first 4 months being very painful.

While the surgery certainly improved my condition, eliminating the urinary incontinence, I did not regain complete control of my bowels.  Since I was unable to completely eliminate waste due to poor muscle control, I developed boils that were spurred on by the accumulated bacteria inside my bowel.  I also suffered from recurring bladder infections that developed from this same bacteria.

I read a brochure by Cindy Caldwell that explained the theory behind colonics.  I decided that I had nothing to lose by trying this alternative procedure.

The result has been life changing!  After a weekly treatment for six weeks, I went to a monthly treatment.  As I understand it, the colonics cleanse the wall of the bowel and intestine, dislodging calcified matter, bacteria and stool.  The tissue becomes more supple, allowing my weakened muscles to manage enough strength to push feces through the bowel and eliminate properly.  The muscles are no longer fighting the rigid, calcified walls of the intestine that existed before the colonic treatments.

I no longer contend with bacterial boil outbreaks or have “accidents” in my underwear.  While I am reliant on monthly colonic treatments, it is a small price to pay!  And yes, I am dependent on treatments.  I have found that if I go an extended period without the colonic treatments, the old problems begin to arise.  However, the cost of the treatment and the time commitment are nothing compared to embarrassing accidents, the risk of odor and the pain of bacterial boils.

In the spirit of 'Self Improvement', I was invited by Cindy Caldwell, Colon Hydrotherapist at Holistic Fitness, to experience a series of colonics. While I had tried numerous types of cleanses, I had never taken the opportunity to explore colon hydrotherapy as a system of cleansing. I considered myself among the individuals who recognized and appreciated the benefits of colon hydrotherapy, but still felt a bit apprehensive when considering it for myself. My experience with Cindy and Holistic Fitness helped to dispel many of the common misunderstandings of colon hydrotherapy.

From the moment I walked through the door at Holistic Fitness, I was educated about each and every step of the colonic process. Cindy started our session with a very relaxed, personal meeting in her office to discuss my health history, then proceeded to lead me through a detailed description of the function of the colon, and the role of a colonic in cleansing the colon. Cindy educated me about the impact of stress on my immune system, and the positive support my body would receive from a series of colonics. We discussed numerous benefits of colon hydrotherapy such as stimulation of the immune system, and the importance of cleansing and releasing toxins from the colon. Cindy took the time to educate me about the process and to discuss any anxiety I had about the procedure before a short walk to the colon hydrotherapy room.

I was pleasantly surprised by a small, private room that was exactly the opposite of what I had imagined. The room was immaculately cleaned and Cindy gave me privacy to get comfortable before she began the procedure. As Cindy started the procedure, she talked me through every step and let me know what to expect throughout the entire process. Cindy's gentle, educated and confident nature comes across in her care, which was essential to me during my first experience with colon hydrotherapy. Ten gallons of distilled water was fed by gravity into, and simultaneously drained from, my colon (via a closed system) through the length of the 20-25 minute procedure. (I learned that the amount of water would be approximately doubled during my 2nd scheduled colonic.) Throughout the process Cindy asked me repeatedly about my comfort level and we discussed my personal goals for improved health. Never during the procedure did I feel that I was not in control of my care. Cindy's presence throughout the procedure ensured that any needs I verbalized to her were met. I was surprised at how what could be defined as an 'invasive procedure', seemed to be such a gentle, supportive experience. When the procedure was finished, there was absolutely no mess (another thing I expected - and feared!), and I was left alone to use the restroom, then dress and meet Cindy in her office.

While the experience of colon hydrotherapy is different for each individual, I felt very 'light' and relaxed after my colonic appointments. My mind felt very clear, as if I had just finished a long meditation or yoga class. The effects of a colonic can be not only physical, but emotional as well. I experienced a strong emotional 'surge' the following weekend, but I also experienced a breakout of pimples that I hadn't seen since high school. As Cindy explained, my body was detoxifying in its own way.

As with any new health behavior we incorporate into our lives, education is a key element to its success. When you can find the combination of professionalism, the desire to educate and the willingness to make the individual an active part of their care that I found with Cindy Caldwell and Holistic Fitness, the experience can be nothing less than empowering.
